Los Cabos

Miles of breathtaking beaches line the refreshing resort towns of Los Cabos-- lively Cabo San Lucas and laid-back San Jose del Cabo. Cabo is the Marlin capital of the world and boasts Mexico's best golf with four world-class 18 hole courses.

Resorts /  Map /  Book Online

Airport Description: Los Cabos International Airport
Best Time to Visit: December through April.
Resort Areas:
The resort town of Cabo San Lucas sits right on the edge of the long Baja California Peninsula, known as Land's End. Referred to as Cabo by the locals, this destination was made famous for it's world class big game sport fishing (notably the powerful Marlin). Cabo has grown to become much more than a fishing village, with many popular night clubs, restaurants, land activities, diving, and of course the famous arches beyond Lover's Beach. The quieter and more laid back village of San Jose del Cabo is to the east of Cabo San Lucas, and is actually the county seat of administration. Its wonderful tree lined streets attract a somewhat older crowd, and cafes, shops and small restaurants are all within easy walking distance of the more traditional central plaza. Further up the coast along the gulf is the area known as the East Cape, which stretches east from San Jose del Cabo and then north up to Los Brailes. The East Cape is a continuous series of coves and beaches that also include some growing small developments. And finally, the Corridor is defined by the four-lane highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. It is home to many beaches and coves, as well as a number of first-class hotels and private developments.
Travel with minors: Rules are subject to change at anytime) Minors traveling with only one parent or adults other than their parents must have a notarized letter from the absent parent (s) authorizing them to be taken out of the country. Currency:
Mexican Peso
Departure Taxes: $16.00, USD (subject to change at anytime)
Drinking Water:
Bottled water is recommended.
Duty Free Shopping: Duty free shopping is available.
Climate/Topography: The geographical features of Baja California Sur, comprising a mountain range to the east and plains to the west, contribute to its varied climate, which is hot and dry on the Pacific Coast and hot and humid on the Gulf of California. Los Cabos has a desert climate with a dry heat tempered by ocean breezes. Though temperatures can soar to 100°F in the summer, the humidity is low and rain storms are rare. Evenings can get windy and chilly in the winter months. Be sure to bring a jacket.

Inoculations Immunizations are normally recommended against diphtheria, tetanus, polio, typhoid, and hepatitis A for travelers. Malaria is found in some rural areas of Mexico.

Rental Car Information: The best way to explore the Los Cabos area is to rent a car at the airport. Most hotels arrange car rentals, too. Avis, Hertz, National, Thrifty and Dollar all have representatives in the area, and the most popular car of choice is a convertible Volkswagen, invariably in white or in red, made in Mexico, and surprisingly tough on dirt-rutted, unpaved roads. It is best to choose the unlimited mileage options as distances can be considerable. Special offers and bargaining make it possible to find a good deal. You don't really need a car unless you want to go into the wilderness or drive outside the two Cabo towns. You may even have more fun without a car; buses are quite frequent and any excursion in an ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) takes you to snorkeling heaven.
Time Zone:
Mountain Time.
Tipping & Taxes: In restaurants, 15-20%, and $2-3 tip per night to housemaids. Porters normally receive $1 per bag.
Tourist Board Phone: 1-800-44 MEXICO

Climate: The geography of the country is very diverse, ranging from semi-arid desert plains to luxuriant valleys of tropical rain forests. Most of the tourists who come to visit are initially attracted by its magnificent golden sand beaches that cover over one-third of its 870 mile coastline, defining three-quarters of its borders. About 80 percent of the country is covered with a series of massive mountain ranges, extending in a northwestern to southeastern direction. Pica Duarte (3175 meters, 10,417 ft) is the highest mountain in the West Indies.
Climate:
The so-called "cool" season is from November to April, with what is considered pleasantly warm weather, relatively low humidity and low precipitation. On the coast the temperature hovers fairly constantly around 29°C (84°F) during the day and drops to around a comfortable 20°C (68°F) at night. However, in the mountainous regions of the interior the weather is always considerably cooler, and on the highest peaks the thermometer sometimes drops below the freezing point and on rare occasions snow can be seen. The "hot" season is roughly from May to October, when the average temperature rises to 31°C (87°F) during the daytime and drops to about 22°C (72°F) at night. However, with the accompanying high humidity that is more common during this season, it usually feels much hotter. It does rain a bit more often during this season, especially from May to August, but usually this turns out to be no more than a 30 minute tropical (sometimes heavy) shower. There are usually also some brief rainy periods during the months of November and December.

The Banderas Bay expansion - the second largest bay in the hemisphere - offers spectacular views of the coast and calm beaches. The bay is clean, and excellent for scuba diving and fishing. However, the rain doesn't usually start until late in the afternoon (4 or 5 o'clock) and this leaves most of the day clear for activities.
